The Book of Lost Things

Reuben loaned me this wonderful book by John Conolly, and it had me laughing out loud on the subway, staying up way past by bedtime just to finish a chapter, and then tiptoeing around our apartment late at night, spooked.

It’s a modern fairy tale with suburb rhythm and pace – it’s a quick read, but when I turned the last page I had that contradictory combination of elation, satisfaction, and disappointment which accompanies only the best books: the elation and satisfaction of a story well told and enjoyed, and the disappointment that it’s over – which is tempered by the reluctant recognition that had it been any longer, it wouldn’t have been the same book. It was just right.

Of course, now I have to go and read every single other book Mr. Connolly has written. What a hardship.

In the meantime, why don’t you read the first chapter, and let me know how you like it!

Thanks Reuben!

  1. Avi, I loved reading your comments to Reuben about John Connely’s book. I also read the first chapter, and I am going to read the rest of the book, too. It is totally marvelous! Thanks for the recommendation and taste. I would probably never have encountered this book were it not for you and Reuben. I have been reading some wonderful books, too, and would love to have a way to share them with you and the world other than via email. I willl work on that idea.

  2. Mom, the easiest way for you to share your book recommendations with the world might be to start a blog with a free blogging service, like wordpress.com or blogger.com. That would let you publish your thoughts on books freely and easily, anytime, and your blog would have both a web address so people could visit it anytime, and a feed so techies like me could just subscribe.
Another option would be to review books on Amazon.com. All your reviews would be collected together on your profile page. (Here’s mine.) It’s maybe a bit less setup up front, but I think it’d be less satisfying – it’s their site, not yours. With a blog service you can choose from a wide selection of designs and themes, and change your choice any time.

  3. Thank You
